Celtic tribes penetrated parts of eastern and northern France, spreading through the rest of the country between the 5th and 3rd century BC. In 2021, France was the biggest energy exporter in Europe, mostly to the UK and Italy, and the largest net exporter of electricity in the world. With more than 10 million tourists per year, the French Riviera is the second leading tourist destination in the country, after the Paris Region. The country’s diverse climate, extensive arable land, modern farming technology, and EU subsidies have made it Europe’s leading agricultural producer and exporter.

In the 16th century, French culture flourished during the French Renaissance, and a French colonial empire emerged.
